Medical payments (MedPay) coverage is part of some people’s car insurance policy. It pays for medical expenses from a car accident regardless of fault. You can think of it as kind of a cheap default health insurance. It is your insurance, not the other at-fault driver’s insurance, that will pay this for you. MedPay coverage is usually for somewhere between $1,000 and $10,000. You will need to review your car insurance policy to see how much you have.
There are a couple of ways to use MedPay coverage to your advantage:
- To Pay For Your Doctor Visits. If you don’t have health insurance, this is a way for you to get access to medical treatment.
- To Pay For Co-Pays & Deductibles. Even if you have health insurance, you can have your doctor (if they agree) run his/her co-pay or deductible charge through your MedPay. This way you are not out-of-pocket any money for medical treatment.
If you have already paid for your medical treatment before reading this, be it the whole bill or a co-pay, you should still try to open a MedPay claim and get your car insurance company to reimburse you for the money spent.
MedPay usually results in more dollars in your pocket. The use of MedPay does not reduce the medical expenses portion of your claim when it comes time to send in your Demand Package. You will claim, and get compensated for, the full face value of your medical bills as if MedPay did not pay for anything. This “breathing room” can be the difference between a good settlement offer and a miserable one. It gives you more room to work in negotiations because it is really “found” money.
