In a “regular” auto accident that doesn’t involve rideshare companies, the at-fault party is responsible for reimbursing the victim’s medical bills. But what happens when an Uber driver is the at-fault party? Will Uber pay for your medical bills?

The answer to that question depends on two factors:

  1. Fault. Uber will pay for medical bills if their driver is responsible for the accident. If the Uber driver is not at fault, Uber will not pay. In the event another motorist does not have auto insurance, Uber will cover your medical expenses through their uninsured motorist coverage.
  2. Amount. Here’s where it gets interesting. Uber’s liability coverage provides $1 million for injuries caused by their drivers when they are providing rides or on their way to pick up passengers. While $1 million seems like a lot of money, and usually it’s more than enough in less serious accidents, that amount may be insufficient to cover serious compensatory damages.

Consider this: A rider could suffer serious life-altering injuries requiring extensive current and future medical care. They could also require long-term physical therapy to recover. As a result, they could lose wages as a result of missed time at work.

What’s more, their injuries could place limits on their physical ability to work and thereby reduce their future earning capacity. They could also be experiencing emotional pain and suffering as a result of their new circumstances. There could be other factors that contribute to their damages, as well.

You can see how quickly damages add up and how $1 million might not be sufficient in some cases.

If you are a passenger in an auto accident involving Uber’s rideshare service, you may need Uber to pay your medical bills up to their $1 million limit or even more, depending on the circumstances. You’ll want to have a competent lawyer on your side to fight for your rights.
