Progressive insurance is one of the largest car insurance companies in the United States. By Progressive’s own account—in its Financial Highlights—it is an exceedingly profitable business. Unlike many other insurance companies, Progressive is a publicly held business, and its stock value has been rising rapidly. Progressive’s rather bland slogan that “you could save hundreds on car insurance” (maybe) isn’t all that encouraging when you think about it—and there may be a very good reason for that.

Insurance Companies in General

It’s important to keep in mind that car insurance companies are in business for one distinct purpose—to turn a profit, and Progressive seems to be doing a good job of this. Many of these companies aren’t above increasing profits by denying claims, fighting claims, and minimizing payouts any way that they can. If customer reviews with the Better Business Bureau are any indication, Progressive very well may be one of these companies.

If you are dealing with a claim against Progressive or any other car insurance company, retain a lawyer as soon as you can. Obtaining compensation for your losses may well depend on it.

Complaints Lodged with the Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) lists a veritable compendium of negative customer reviews for Progressive (which isn’t BBB accredited). The complaints focus on a variety of issues:

  • Customer service in general. Many Progressive customers lodge complaints with the BBB regarding the company’s overall customer service—or lack thereof. People complain of having their coverage rescinded without notification—even as they continue to receive correspondence related to their active accounts. Further, these customers find that Progressive’s customer service is disinclined to help remedy their problems. In general, it seems that the guiding principle behind Progressive’s customer service department may well be obfuscation.
  • Price hikes. Other disgruntled Progressive customers repeatedly lodge complaints with the BBB about Progressive’s random and frequent price hikes on premiums—even for customers who never brought a claim.
  • Scam artists. Many, many former Progressive customers go so far—in their complaints to the BBB—as to call Progressive a bunch of scam artists. The less scathing among these irate customers call Progressive socially irresponsible. A common thread among these complaints is, again, policies that were dropped for no apparent reason. Further, Progressive made these customers jump through hoops to get their already-paid-for premiums back on these rescinded policies (a Progressive mistake in the first place).

In the end, former Progressive customers along with disgruntled current customers can’t seem to find enough ways to express the company’s many failings.
