Data from the National Safety Council suggests that traveling during many traditional holidays, such as the Memorial Day weekend, carries a certain level of added risk. The average number of traffic fatalities during Memorial Day weekends is 12 percent higher than on non-holiday weekends.
Unfortunately, the traffic on Memorial Day weekend this year was particularly deadly. By 6:00 p.m. on Memorial Day 2022, there were reports of 12 traffic deaths. In addition to these deadly car accidents, five reported fatalities occurred due to a Memorial Day boating accident in Georgia.
The fatal accident involved two boats carrying nine people on the Wilmington River, just outside Savannah. The U.S. Coast Guard stated that four people were taken to the hospital immediately after the boat accident. Two people were found dead shortly afterward, and three more bodies were recovered the following morning. According to the Department of Natural Resources, one of the survivors has been charged with boating under the influence.
