SANDY SPRINGS, GA – A Roswell man was arrested after he allegedly crashed into a Sandy Springs patrol car while drunk Saturday morning, according to CBS46.
The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. as an officer was sitting in the patrol car with the emergency lights flashing. The vehicle was stationed in a lane closure on Georgia 400 near Hammond Drive. Police said 38-year-old Elfego Lucas Rivas struck the police car and then drove off, but was apprehended later. The officer in the car was hospitalized but the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Rivas is now facing numerous charges, including DUI, aggravated assault, and hit and run. Police said the incident served as a reminder of the state’s “Move Over” Law, requiring drivers to change lanes and give room to emergency responders such as police, fire, emergency medical services, or HERO units.
